Andalusia: Growing organic citrus

There is news that Andalusia is betting on organic farming. I show more than 6000 manufacturers and 600,000 hectares, making up 10 per cent of the utilized agricultural area in the region. The Director of Development Committee Andaluz de Agricultura Ecológica (CAAE), Alvaro Barrero, said that the pantry is andalusia Eco Europe and "do not know because we are not consumers."

According to the Committee

most of the Spanish industries that distribute or market makes organic citrus in the international market, because in Spain is not enough demand to produce so large that the recent past are given. So this leads Andalusia citrus crop mode , with more than 2,000 hectares, according to a report out in anurario informational Cítricos of Spain, the group AGRARIA EUROPE.

The

organic farming is a method that uses best practices to produce foods with the highest level of quality assurance and health . With a growth rate constant, the citrus sector in total production in Spain a total of 3,000 hectares, of which over 2,000 are located in Andalusia.

The Spanish case

Nationally, Spain last year ranked third place in the world market for organic citrus, with the orange head of production, after Italy and Greece, while still located far from the number of hectares of Italian country, as confirmed CAAE. For the other regions, after Andalusia, lead the production of the organic citrus Valencia, Murcia, the Balearics, the Canaries and Catalonia.

With respect to the subject, the committee indicated that one aspect that can be developed by the organic citrus industry is the transformation of the product to other sectors such as confectionery, perfumes and cosmetics.

Importance of citrus

We must remember that citrus is a set of species, which belong to the genus Citrus. play an important role in food of many people in the world. The main characteristic of the genus is presence in all the organs of a plant essential oil that gives it its characteristic odor. The species comprising this group provide significant amounts of vitamin C, minerals (calcium and phosphorus ).

Citrus

are from tropical and subtropical Asia, this genus contains three species and many cultivated hybrids, including fruits marketed more widely, as lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit and tangerine , with various varieties depending on the region in which it is grown each of them.

Due to the ease of hybridization of citrus, all crops for commercial use are obtained by grafting the desired cultivar on plant species selected for their resistance to disease.
